Shelly is mad at her older sister Beth.
"Do you think it's 1991 or something?" Beth asked over breakfast. "Are you aware that this is Chicago, not Seattle? Grunge died a long time ago, my friend."
Shelly begs to differ. She's not "grunge." She just happens to like Soundgarden a lot. She saw them at Lollapalooza last year. That's why she has their patch on her backpack. As for her flannel shirt and ripped jeans, they're just comfortable. Why should she suck herself into skinny jeans and a belted blouse when she could wear this? And she just hasn't had time to re-dye her stringy hair, which is why it's still unevenly blue at the bottom.
Why do people always have to compare her personal choices to the past? How can she be nostalgic about something that she didn't really live through, anyway? Whatever. Shelly will do what she wants.
Busy busy busy. Much go-go dancing has been happening, which is delightful. But I saw this super grunge girl on the train the other day, and it was the 20 year anniversary of Nirvana's "Nevermind" album, too. So I felt like I had to write about her.
